Even when we appear to live in a world slightly overpopulated with superheroes and stars: we do actually desperately need a few such specimens, especially those that have smoothly mastered the leap from the 1980s of the 20th century into the 21st century. Captain Future is unquestionably one of them.
And what would Captain Future be without the ingenious musical support of Christian Bruhn? His original compositions combine futuristic sounds with catchy tunes that even from today`s perspective can confidently be called classics.
On October 17, 2004 Christian Bruhn celebrated his 70th birthday and for this occasion COLOSSEUM published an homage to his work on April 18, 2005 in the form of a Captain Future Remix Album. 15 national and international artists and formations have created their own vision of Captain Future songs in the album, producing an album that illuminates all the facets of modern electronic music, placing them within the context of Christian Bruhn`s compositions with great humor and wonderful frivolity. Captain Future: Reanimated sometimes sounds lively and danceable, sometimes groovy and clubby, sometimes relaxing and peaceful, just like the original.
The tracking list quite consciously includes known and still unknown names, brought together by one thing: lots of fun in mixing and a great deal of love for the songs – whether rediscovered, always there or kindled entirely anew. The palette of artists extends from Air Liquide to N.O.H.A. and the Tiger Tunes to Sirius Mo`s version of Lass uns fliegen (Let`s Fly), which will be released separately as a single. Christian Bruhn himself has even added two as yet unpublished tracks to the album: firstly, Circus Music, a piece from a TV series, will be published for the first time, and secondly, Captain Future 2000 represents his own remix.
There are very few artists who have so strongly influenced the musical history of Germany in the last 40 years, as has Christina Bruhn. Whether Ein bisschen Spass muss sein (You`ve Got to Have a Little Fun), Marmor, Stein und Eisen bricht (Marble, Stone and Iron Break), Wunder gibt es immer wieder (Miracles Happen All the Time) or 2 kleine Italiener (2 Small Italians), innumerable pieces of film music and catchy advertising tunes (Milka, Haribo, ...) – Christian Bruhn is behind all of these unforgettable melodies with the guaranteed sing along factors. He celebrated his greatest successes predominantly with music for films and TV series. Representative songs include Heidi (title song) or Timm Thaler – whether one`s personal taste shakes its head or nods in agreement, the fact is that probably almost German can begin to sing his melodies straight off and that is an achievement the likes of which are second to none.
Christian Bruhn has many anecdotes to tell about the music for Captain Future, for instance, that the title song was not written for this series originally, but was actually meant to be the title theme for an Indian film, which the producer considered too modern. Thus, the way was clear forCaptain Future.
STATEMENTS ON CAPTAIN FUTURE RE-ANIMATED
Christian Bruhn:
Although my cult work, that is, the music to the animated series CAPTAIN FUTURE, has already gone through innumerable remixes, with few exceptions they come from music-loving amateurs.
In the now finished album CAPTAIN FUTURE RE-ANIMATED, however, we are dealing with the work of professionals, that is, of experienced DJs, who on the one hand naturally have a great love for the music, and yet on the other hand know the wishes of their special clients extremely well.
A remix is always a compliment to the original composer and mixer of a piece of music (that`s me in this case). For certain passages in the original appeal so strongly to the remixer that he picks them out, embellishes them, repeats them and, so to speak, raises them onto a pedestal.
That also seems to be what happened to my colleagues with the CAPTAIN FUTURE music. A harmony, a chordal succession, the fragment of a melody or a guitar phrase becomes the basis of a new work, i.e. the remix. For this the individual tracks of the 24-track-tape were carefully digitalized (luckily it still existed) and given to the young artists for free adaptation.
And I have to say: It was worth it! Appreciatively and happily I listen to the sounds that are both so familiar and so new to me and am astonished about what all can be done with such a piece of music; I am also fortunate that so many highly gifted colleagues have been so intensely involved with my original work. I am also very thankful to the people who initiated this project, the people from COLOSSEUM, in particular the producer Tobias Thiem, and I gratefully bow my head to my co-musicians from 1980 and to Bibo, the Jazz god, without whom none of this would have been possible.
